Young SMEs Interreg IVC Policy Paper

Categories: News, Other

SMEs are vital part of a successful economy. Not only do they support
supply chains, foster innovation and entrepreneurship but they essentially
create sustainable communities through job creation. Supporting SMEs
firstly to help them survive beyond their formative years, to help them
grow into strong and competitive businesses and for them to help
stimulate new business creation contributes to prosperous local and
regional economies whilst at the same time reducing unemployment
rates significantly.

However, research suggests that many SMEs will not make their 5th
year. Between 3 and 5 years is the age at when a business is mostly
likely to fail. Whilst there is currently an array of both public and private
sector support to encourage entrepreneurship, support the creation of
new business and help existing businesses, there is very little or even
nothing in some area’s to specifically support Young SMEs. Current
business support provision is developed, delivered and implemented
according to the sector, size or growth potential of a business. In some
cases age is considered but typically that support is only provided until
a business is 3 years old. This is not sufficient. To help the survival and
growth of Young SMEs there needs to be a shift away from generic
support to a more targeted approach aimed at businesses aged 3-5
years.

Franchising: A Way for Entrepreneurship

Categories: News, Other

On October 21, 2014, the Commercial Service of the United States Embassy, in cooperation with the INCYDE Foundation as a representative of Fondo Social Europeo, presents “Franchising: A Way for Entrepreneurship”, an event to educate young, aspiring entrepreneurs under 30 about business opportunities concerning franchising. Two US franchises will be showcased as potential investment opportunities: Plan Ahead Events, an event management company, and The Alternative Board, offering advisory board meetings between companies, orientation services and business coaching.

Starting a business is a long and tortuous path that requires designing a business plan that we don’t always know will be viable, creating a brand image that will appeal to the public, designing marketing actions, etc. As a result of these obstacles, many find the idea of franchising as a great jump start into the entrepreneurial world man, considering the brand is positioned in the market, a defined business model already exists, certain profits are guaranteed and the expertise is based on experience and know-how.

The speakers of the event include the US Ambassador James Costos, US Commercial Consellor Robert Jones, Technical Director of INCYDE  José María Párraga, General Director of the Spanish Franchise Association (AEF) Eduardo Abadía, and the General Director and Franchise Consulter of Barbadillo Asociados Santiago Barbadillo.

With regard to the two successful US franchises, Plan Ahead Events will be presented by CEO and Master Franchisor Andrea Lazzari, and The Alternative Board by Michele Fishman, Vice President of International Development.

Working Group SMEs & Academic kaunas, Lithuania

Categories: Industry / Business linkages with Academic, News

In Lithuania the cooperation between science and business is regarded as a necessity and there is a tendency to seek it because of its good nature.

When the partnership between science and business is viewed from the above mentioned perspective, it is good to know that Lithuania already has a number of measures which help to unite such different sectors.

The successful cooperation between science and business communities determines the spread and establishment of innovations in all areas of life and the effective use of innovations in business encourages economic and export development and increases performance efficiency and the country’s economic competitiveness.

Science and/or technology parks play the leading role in the promotion and popularization of innovations and the encouragement of the emergence of new innovative enterprises, the innovative development of already existing companies and the innovative partnership between science and business, and the execution of activities involving the provision of financial support for innovations

…..

In the near future it is necessary to seek better scientific research application to industrial activities by encompassing the entire value chain. When it comes to the education system, it is imperative to increase the motivation of the future work force to create added value through the use of the latest scientific achievements.
